Maria M. Khury is a Dominican-American entrepreneur and community leader. She is CEO & President of Khury Tours and Travel, Inc. (IATA- International & ARC- Domestic Licensing) as well as the Principal Partner of Elite Deco Eco Painting, M/WBE. Ms. Khury is also a Licensed NYS Insurance Broker and Business Consultant who graduated Magna-Cum-Laude from Manhattan College, with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1977 where she was awarded the De La Salle Excellence Medal in Management.
Ms. Khury became the first woman and Dominican ever elected President of ALTA (Association of Latin-American Travel Agents) in 1990 and re-elected in the year 1991. She was the President of over 1480 agents in the New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Washington and Florida areas. Thereafter, she held several executive positions and remains an active shareholder and Board Member. In 2003 she was the 1st Latina to sit in the Airline Reporting Corporation Council. As a member Ms. Khury was acknowledged for being instrumental in representing the agents and voicing concern regarding the changes in the travel industry.
She has served as a member in the Small Business Advisory Board of the City of New York, under the Honorable Mayor Koch and Dinkins. Ms. Khury’s involvement and advisory position to LATINAPAC (a political advocacy group) positioned the organization to be one of the most influential and outreach group for several political campaigns particularly that of Mayor Bloomberg.
Her countless contributions to her community includes serving as an officer on the Boards of Friends of Lead Free Children, Schervier/Bon Secours Nursing System (Board Member and Chair of the Audit and Compliance and Gala committees), Yes! The Bronx, as well as her leadership with Bronx Community Board 8 where she is a Board Member and past Committee Chair of Health, Hospital and Social Services and Economic Development.
Ms. Khury has also been the first Hispanic Vice-Chair of Bronx Community Board 8, Board Advisor to the Interfaith Caregivers of the Northwest Bronx, Member and Treasurer of The Business Improvement District of Kingsbridge (BID), Board Member of the Audubon Partnership and Member of the Manhattan College Alumni Society Board, Corresponding Secretary, and the President and Co-Founder of MCLAC (Manhattan College Latino Alumni Council).
Maria has been recognized for her work on many occasions, of note, being selected as Business Woman of the Year for the New York State Federation of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce (1994 and 2012). In 2001, Ms. Khury was honored by the Dominican Women Caucus, the Bronx Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Peter F. Vallone with the Business and Community Leadership recognition Award. SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) honored Ms. Khury in 2002 and in 2005 Ms. Khury was the first woman recognized and given the Leadership Citizen award along with Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson from the Interfaith Organization of Schervier/ Bon Secours New York Health System.
Dominican Sunday, and Dominican Women Center, Inc. have also recognized Maria’s contributions.
In 2006, Ms. Khury was honored among the “Mujeres Destacadas” by the El Diario/La Prensa. “Somos El Futuro” in 2007 recognized Ms. Khury in Albany by State Senator Eric Schneiderman.
Ms. Khury has also been honored with several Proclamations both in New York and New Jersey. Some of the recognitions received have been from former Governor Mario Cuomo, the first Public Advocate for the City of New York Mr. Mark Green, Councilman Koppell on behalf of the Kingsbridge Riverdale Development Corporation, NYC Council Chamber Award from Councilwomen Julissa Ferreras and Diana Reyna as well as Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat for her business and community involvement.
Born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Ms. Maria M. Khury immigrated to the USA at the age of eight. She resides and works in Riverdale. She is the proud mother of three children; twins Carlos Manuel and Lark-Marie and Mayrin Maria Anton. Maria is also a grandmother to three beautiful children named Amelia, Daniel and Sophia Menchini.
