One of New York’s Finest was front and center at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on Tuesday in Washington, DC.
President Trump paid tribute at the somber event to tragic NYPD officer Miosotis Familia, gunned down on the job last summer in the Bronx by a cop-hating madman.
Moments after calling for the death penalty for cop-killers, Trump spotted Familia’s son, daughters, elderly mother, and partner in the crowd and warmly escorted them on stage to a round of applause.
“[Familia] was ambushed by a man for the simple reason that she was a member of the police department”, said Trump. “That was the simple reason”.
The 48-year-old mother of three was sitting in a mobile command post at East 183rd Street and Morris Avenue around 12:30 a.m. July 5, 2017, when Alexander Bonds, 34, walked up and blasted her through the window without warning.
Familia died a short time later at St. Barnabas Hospital.
“This is a woman who got injured a while ago and volunteered to come back to patrol to one of the roughest places in New York City”, said Familia’s partner, Vincent Maher, as he choked back tears. “She volunteered to leave a cushy job to come back to patrol”.
“I had the honor of being with her that night”, said Maher. “She was an incredible person and she is missed by this family”.
