For three decades, Cooperative Home Care Associates, a worker-owned cooperative in the Bronx, has empowered individuals to achieve economic independence through meaningful employment opportunities in the home care industry. Since 2014, CHCA has enrolled 890 individuals who are immigrants to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in its free, four-week training and employment program. Nearly all were unemployed at enrollment or had never held formal employment. More than 750 of the women and men who successfully completed the training program were hired in high quality home care jobs supporting older adults and people living with disabilities in their communities -earning competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, and the opportunity to become owners of the nation’s largest worker-owned cooperative.
As a certified B Corporation ranked “Best for the World” since 2012, CHCA has received widespread recognition for its high-road business and employment practices. In 2015, the company received the highly competitive “Outstanding Employer” award from the New York City Employment and Training Coalition. CHCA also provides advancement opportunities, offering rare and valuable career pathways for entry-level healthcare workers. CHCA provides essential home care services for the Dominican community’s older adults and people living with disabilities, helping individuals to remain living independently in their homes. The company provides three million hours of care each year to more than 1,600 people -over half of whom are part of the Dominican communities in the Bronx and Washington Heights.
